About
I first learnt about photography when studying for a foundation art course in Southend. At the same time, I also became interesting in print making – more of that later. However, I then went to university in Leeds, to read English & Philosophy and then American Literature – that makes a return too.
“The camera is an excuse to be someplace you otherwise don’t belong. It gives me both a point of connection and a point of separation.” Susan Meiselas
After several years working in the NHS, I took a career break to travel, when I did some travel photography and writing. On returning to the UK, I studied Photojournalism & Documentary Photography at the University of Arts London. Today I still work in healthcare but photography forms part of my daily life.
For me, photography is both a means and a reason to explore and make sense of the world around me. It’s also a way to practice mindfulness and achieve a state of flow. Many of my photographs are snatched moments, whilst going from A to B, busy with something else.
I keep a visual diary on Instagram @james_peskett, Facebook and Tumbler. I also undertake personal projects on a variety of subjects that interest me. I am a member of the RPS and the AOP.
“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.” Elliott Erwitt
Recently, I’ve been learning photopolymer etching, which allows me to produce physical prints of photographic images using intaglio and/or relief printing techniques. Drawing upon my study of literature, I am also experimenting with using poetic forms as a way to sequence images. I hope to share more examples of both these projects on this website.
Please enjoy and do feel free to get in touch.
