The Coronavirus pandemic has had many unique visual tropes: masks and social distancing signs, for example. During Lockdown 1.0, there was also a sudden proliferation of rainbows. Children, being schooled at home, put them in their windows or chalked them on pavements. Shops and other businesses followed the trend. They became a universal symbol of solidarity, hope and gratitude. But, as social distancing restrictions eased, the rainbows began to disappear. The NHS remains under severe pressure but, as symbols are replaced by statistics, the ongoing struggle goes largely unseen. Rainbows lighten the heart but they do not last.
